Splinter is the adoptive father and sensei of the Turtles and most protective.  He understands that the world above the sewers would not understand nor tolerate mutant turtles in their city.  Splinter has vowed vengeance for the death of his master Hamato Yoshi in the hands of Shredder back when he was a pet rat.
